Dana has lived in Hudsonville for nearly 20 years and West Michigan for 25 years. He grew up in Gaylord, Michigan, as the oldest of four, and moved to West Michigan to attend Kendall College of Art and Design, where he graduated in 2003 with a BFA in Visual Communication.
He and his wife, Keri, are high school sweethearts. They have five children together and are excited to welcome their first grandchild this year. All five children have attended or are current students in Hudsonville Public Schools.
Dana’s career began in graphic design and marketing, then grew into a focus on User Experience Design, which involves designing websites and software applications in a way that often requires condensing complex functionality and concepts into something easy to use. This has allowed him to pursue his passion for creating things that improve people’s lives. His work has allowed him to lead groups, manage people, and work directly with executives and companies across a wide range of industries and companies, including startups, healthcare, finance, Fortune 100, and government agencies. He has also co-founded a successful startup and is a founding member of two cutting-edge talent networks. The latest one operates in the rapidly developing Artificial Intelligence space.
Dana attends ResLife church in Grandville and has volunteered with The Grand Rapids Dream Center, a faith-based organization focused on transforming under-resourced communities in Grand Rapids by building authentic relationships and providing consistent support through various programs and outreach efforts.
Dana has served on the board of his homeowner’s association for the last five years and serves the community as a member of the Jamestown Planning Commission. He has been an Ottawa County Republican Party precinct delegate since 2022.
His school involvement includes participating in the Watch D.O.G.S. program, volunteering for reading time in his son’s class, and being a “shark” at the Riley Middle School Shark Tank event. He has attended HPS board meetings since April 2020 and has a 97% attendance record. In 2021, he started to video record board meetings and make them available online for free as a public service, allowing people to watch at their convenience.
Dana's curiosity fuels a continuous drive to learn and stay well-informed on a wide range of issues and topics. He wants to ensure a strong focus on all students achieving academic and athletic excellence that is agenda-free, unbiased, and without any outside influence. He believes that the HPS board should seek a high standard of excellence and hold themselves, the superintendent, the administration, and the staff to the highest standards of excellence and accountability.
Dana will advocate for HPS producing students who are deeply anchored in essential academic subjects, well-mannered, and eager to give their best effort in everything they do. This is the foundation for creating people who develop into well-intentioned, successful contributors to our community and society.
Every student is unique and deserving of a quality education in a safe environment and attuned to individual needs
Parents and guardians have the right to direct the care, teaching and education of their children. They need the school board to be their advocates.
Great teachers are the backbone of a successful school district. They should have the right tools to excel as well as an open door to work with the school board.
Kids grow up fast enough as it is. Extra care needs to be given to ensuring they are not exposed to things that aren't age appropriate or against a parent's wishes.
The focus should be on students learning the fundamentals of core subjects and exceeding district and state standards while also meeting the individual learning needs of each student.
The school board needs to determine clear and measurable goals for the superintendent to meet. These should align with parent and community concerns and help propel the district forward.
After four years of attending HPS board meetings, actively engaging with the community, and immersing myself in resources to become an effective board member, I am prepared to work productively with the board from day one. Serving on the HPS board of education is the logical next step in enhancing my commitment to HPS and equipping students who will go on to benefit the community I love. I want to ensure all students are deeply anchored in essential academic subjects, well-mannered, and eager to give their best effort in everything they do. I want to see the board and the superintendent uphold the highest standards of excellence and accountability, Ensuring that our community not only preserves its strong values but also thrives well into the future. I am dedicated to preserving childhood innocence and respecting the rights of parents.
My career experience has allowed me to work with leaders, manage people, and interact with a broad range of people. Part of my job is to understand the various users that will use a product. This skill set has helped me to seek understanding and work on solutions in unique ways. I’m a problem solver at heart and enjoy the challenge of finding solutions that improve people’s lives. I also think my experience with attending 97% of board meetings for the last four years has prepared me with invaluable knowledge of what serving on the board will require. The Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) offers training to school board members on various topics. I reached out to them to inquire about taking some of the introductory courses in order to be even more prepared but was told that only current serving board members are allowed access to the courses. My curiosity drives me to continually learn and stay well-informed on a wide range of issues and topics.
The board of education is the driving force behind a thriving school district, evaluating and hiring the superintendent, diligently shaping policies, guiding financial and operational decisions, and championing a high-quality education for every student. They ensure that our schools are places where all students can achieve their fullest potential.
I have attended many Jamestown township board and planning commission meetings over the last 6 years. I now serve on the Jamestown Planning Commission. I am also the secretary of my Homeowner’s Association and have been an Ottawa GOP precinct delegate since 2022. I have attended HPS board meetings since 2020 and have rarely missed a meeting. Attending these meetings has provided many great insights about board functions and the processes that go into conducting the business of the school district.
